Brows are sisters, not twins — and that’s great news for us girls! It means we don’t have to get both to look exactly the same, just close.
You can go about filling in sparse brows two ways; powder or pencil.
For sparse brows that are otherwise in shape, I like to use a powder applied with an angled brush. The powder should always be 1-2 shades lighter than your hair (unless you’re blonde, in which case you go a shade darker). I like powder/wax duos. You can find good ones that range in price from drugstore brands to department store brands — E.L.F. to Smashbox. The powder fills in gaps while the wax holds your brows in perfect place without making them stiff.
For brows that are too thin, where the shape needs to be sketched in, I’d go with a pencil. Through my research, I came across a waterproof one by Tarte that had great reviews. The teeny tiny tip mimics hair when sketched on in small strokes. It’ll take practice in order to get it just right, but once you’ve got it down, you’ll become a pro.
Waterproof is great for summer when sweat and humidity can melt off our hard work.
Here’s what Tarte says about their emphasEyes:
“A follow-up to Tarte’s best-selling EmphasEYES Inner Rim Eye Pencil, emphasEYES waterproof brow pencil is a super-slim, waterproof brow pencil that glides on smoothly and will last all day thanks to a patented plant-wax system infused with natural botanicals, aloe, vitamins A & E, and mineral pigments. Unlike thick wooden pencils that tug and look unnatural, emphasEYES is four times thinner so it perfectly mimics actual brow hair for a more natural effect. This dual-ended pencil also features a precision brush to help groom and tame unruly hairs into place.

Hold EmphasEYES Waterproof Brow Pencil vertically to the side of your nose to determine where your brow should begin. Find where your brow should end by tilting the pencil on the outside corner of your nose aligned with the outside corner of your eye. Using the tip of emphasEYES brow fill in sparse areas with small hairlike strokes in the direction of hair growth. Using the brush groom & control brows into place.”
